1. Single Title Contemporary books are presently redefining themselves. Publishers want books that will appeal to a wider readership. 2. Publishers have three level of published authors: Top authors, mid-list authors, and beginning authors. 3. Single Title Contemporaries are more than just a love story. The subplot is just as important as the love story. 4. Contemporaries have to be more believable than an historical because the story takes place in the present time period. 5. Be exact in your research. Make sure the picture world you write about is correct. Limit variables. 6. Watch your language--use foul language only when it is absolutely necessary to make your story or character believable. 7. The story must have a great hook--maybe suspense or mystery. The reader must want to continue turning to pages to see what happens next. 8. Remember, readers like to learn about new things. 9. Atmosphere can be a big asset to these books. 10. Give the reader a good subplot. Make the reader not mind that you're turning the action away from the love story. 11. Avoid stereo-typical situations. 12. Good pacing is essential to these books. 13. When using the Alpha Male, be sure to tone him down to the correct level for the 90's reader. 14. Develop the love story and keep sexual tension high. Write from your own voice. Don't change the type writer you are. 15. A good book is a good book. Don't be overly concerned with guidelines.
